Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The eighteenth century was a period of intense optimism--the Enlightenment--paralleled by equally intense political turmoil. Our seminar will first look at three travel narratives that represent this optimism, a part of which is manifested in a delighted curiosity about whatever is culturally "other." Then we will turn to the politics against which these explorations are set. Authors to be included are James Boswell, Lady Montagu, Goethe, Thomas Paine, and Hannah More.
