Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will focus on the period post-Independence (1922) to the present. It will consider the relationship between gender, sexuality and national identity in Ireland in historical, social and cultural contexts. Exploring literature and film from the early 20th century to the present, the course will address topics such as the trope of 'Mother Ireland'; sexuality, violence and culture; masculinity, homosociality and ethnicity; the interplay of language and gender.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance, preparation of set readings and participation in class discussions; oral presentation; written final test.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

By the end of the module, students will
1. understand key critical and theoretical concepts in the analysis of gender and sexuality in the construction of Irish identity;
2. be able to apply these concepts in textual analysis;
3. have developed critical, analytic and presentation skills;
4. be able to write an essay demonstrating critical skills and awareness of the construction and representation of gender, sexuality and identity.

Examination topics

Small-group and all-class discussions of set readings; paper presentations.
