Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Women writers have made a major contribution to the literary output and the prominence of the American South in modern US literature. The seminar will analyze short and long fiction by major literary voices from various parts of the South, taking into account the distinct regional cultures. It will explore issues of race and class and will focus on the importance of family and marital relationships and trace shifts in the role of women in Southern society.

Assessment and permitted materials

Seminar paper (20-22 pages), oral presentation, regular attendance and active class participation, two written reports on sessions of up to two pages each, final written test.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of this seminar is to acquaint students with fiction, novels and short stories by women writers from the American South composed since World War II.

Examination topics

Student presentations of research papers on the topics chosen, general discussion of the texts and their location in the tradition of Southern literature and in the changes the region has seen since the 1950s.

Reading list

The texts chosen range from a novel by Eudora Welty (The Optimist's Daughter) and stories by Elizabeth Spencer (from MS) through short fiction by African American writer Alice Walker (from GA) and a novel by Lee Smith (originally from the Piedmont sub-region of Virginia), to fiction by Bobbie Ann Mason and, possibly, by Barbara Kingsolver (from the former border state of Kentucky).
A Reader with a number of short stories will supplement the novels chosen for the seminar. It is available at Copystudio, Schwarzspanierstraße. Editions of Welty's 'The Optimist's Daughter' and Smith's 'Family Linen' are available at Facultas (Campus).
