Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this seminar we will analyse plays and novels set in the world of the university. These texts feature academics as well as students and explore such issues as tenure, plagiarism, rivalries among professors, research (or the lack of it), and the pedagogic as well as sexual climate in the ivory tower. Although there are many thematic similarities the generic differences between plays and novels also necessitate different approaches and techniques in representing the domain of higher education. We will also take a look at some film versions of the texts. Woody Allen's new movie, 'Irrational Man', will provide a foray into recent developments in representing academia.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance, oral presentation, active participation in class discussions, research paper (ca. 20 pp.), final written test.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Acquaint students with texts from the 1960s to the 1990s which reflect the world they move in and provide fascinating perspectives on the academic environment they are part of. Moreover, they are made aware of fictional representations of the developments in higher education in the second half of the twentieth century.
Examination topics
Introduction to ‘academic literature’ and analytical parameters, students’ presentations, class discussions.
