Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

As a cultural phenomenon, 'Stage Irishness' may be considered a stereotyped misrepresentation of Irish people in drama, film, and other fields of cultural production. The proverbial 'Stage Irishman' is featured as an inarticulate, hard-drinking, braggart who turns out to be a coward upon closer introspection - a hetero-stereotype constructed by English colonial power politics to contain the freedom struggle of the Irish people.

Although modern Ireland has become a free country, it is still deeply imbued with Stage Irish othering strategies. Hence, Stage Irishness may be considered a contested field which both challenges and reproduces cultural misrepresentations of Irish identity in terms of gender, religion, politics, and art.

To analyze these and related topics, we will look at Stage Irish (mis)representations in literature (Shakespeare, Boucicault, Synge, O'Casey, O'Brien, McDonagh, David Ireland) and on screen (The Quiet Man, Darby O'Gill and the Little People, Finian's Rainbow, Father Ted).
