Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents: The seminar will focus on literary works by American, Anglo-Indian, British, Irish and Australian Aboriginal authors of the 20th and 21st centuries, dealing with different varieties of cross-cultural encounters and/or the impact of voluntary or enforced emigration from one's native home on individual and cultural identity - narratives of cross-cultural connection, collision, alienation as well as of self-conscious reassertion of ethnic identity and/or cultural difference. The texts discussed include T. C. Boyle's celebrated novel "The Tortilla Curtain" (1995), the play "The Keepers" (1988) by the indigenous Australian writer Bob Maza and short stories by Anglophone authors from different cultural backgrounds including Salman Rushdie, Jean Rhys, William Trevor, Roddy Doyle, Eoin McNamee, Eilis Ni Dhuibhne and others.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment: regular attendance throughout the semester, active participation in the discussions in class; submission of one seminar paper in English (10.000 words; BA thesis 11000 words), which must be an authentic work written by the participant individually (no group work!); one PPT presentation (individually or as a member of a group) of about 20 mins per speaker; a final essay (700 words+) to be written in class. - Deadline for submitting the seminar-paper: strictly at the appointed date, usually one week after the presentation (unless stated otherwise). - A feedback will be given within two weeks after submission.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Aims: To develop students' cross-cultural understanding and awareness of cultural difference; to provide students with the given historical and cultural contexts of the works discussed; to advance students' skills in interpreting literary works from different genres, cultural backgrounds and historical periods; to further develop students' competence in writing research papers and to perfect their proficiency in written and oral English as well as their expertise in MIT-based presentation techniques.

Examination topics

Methods: Interactive teaching, computer-aided presentations; introductory lecture units providing guidelines for students' presentations and basic information on the historical and cultural contexts of the works discussed; interactive teaching units with students' presentations (PPT) and plenum discussions.

Reading list

Texts: Students are asked to purchase a copy of T.C. Boyle's "The Tortilla Curtain" (preferably the latest Penguin edition of 2011); a folder containing all the other primary texts will be available by 30 Sep at the Copy-Studio, Schwarzspanierstrasse 10.
