Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar will focus on short stories and a novel by Irish writers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, dealing with varieties of love relationships in the special cultural, moral and religious context of Ireland. The texts selected will address such issues as premarital love, star-crossed love, involuntary spinsterhood/bachelorhood, the quest for one's soul-mate, romantic fulfilment in true love, unrequited love, loveless marriages of convenience, adulterous love-relationships, divorce, as well as short-lived erotic encounters resulting in unwanted pregnancies and their often dire social consequences in Catholic Ireland. The narrative texts discussed include works by celebrated writers like Edna O'Brien, William Trevor, John Banville, Eilis Ni Dhuibhne, Colm Toibin and Maeve Binchy, as well as aspiring young authors like Claire Keegan or Cecelia Ahern. The range of texts includes postmodernist writings as well as popular fiction in the "chick-lit" mode.

Assessment and permitted materials

Requirements: regular attendance throughout the semester, active participation in the discussions in class; submission of one seminar paper in English (10,000 words; BA thesis 11,000 words), which must be an authentic work written by the participant individually (no group work!); one PPT presentation (individually or as a member of a group) of about 20 mins per speaker; a final essay (700 words+) to be written in class. - Deadline for submitting the seminar-paper: strictly at the appointed date (usually one week after the presentation, unless stated otherwise). - A feedback will be given within two weeks after submission.

One input unit on the historical and cultural contexts; interactive and computer-based teaching units supported by muti-media presentations and the use of the e-learning platfrom; students' PPT presentations and forum-discussion.
