Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar will focus on works of (short) fiction featuring teachers as protagonists as well as on one actual memoir recording the life and teaching experience of Frank McCourt recorded in "Teacher Man" (2006). The works considered deal with a wide variety of classroom situations at different types of schools and educational institutions, and also with texts featuring teachers in private situations and texts addressing the impact of a teacher’s professional life on his private sphere. The short stories selected for discussion include works by American writers (e.g. Charles Baxter, Ron Carlson), British authors (e.g. Helen Simpson, Mary Scott) and Irish writers (e.g. Eilis, Edna O’Brien, Ni Dhuibhne).

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance throughout the semester obligatory; active participation in the discussions in class; submission of one seminar paper in English (8,000 words+; BA thesis 11,000 words+), which must be an authentic work written by the participant individually (no group work!); one PPT presentation (individually or as a member of a group) of 20 mins per speaker; a final essay (700 words+) to be written in class. – Deadline for submitting the seminar-paper: strictly at the appointed date, usually one week after the presentation (unless stated otherwise). A feedback will be given within three weeks after submission.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To advance student’s skills in the analysis of works of fiction; to enhance their critical awareness of the role of the teacher in classroom situations, and to advance their knowledge in pedagogy and didactic skills by critically assessing the teacher-protagonist’s teaching skills, teaching methods, and his/her qualifications; to advance the students’ competence in writing an academic research paper; to perfect students’ proficiency in written and oral English and of their computer-based presentation skills.

Examination topics

Interactive teaching, computer-aided presentations; introductory unit providing guidelines for the students’ presentations and tasks; interactive teaching units with students’ presentations (PPT) and plenum discussions; use of the e-learning platform Moodle.

Reading list

Students are required to purchase a copy of Frank McCourt’s "Teacher Man" (Pb. edition HarperCollins 2006); a “Reader” containing the short stories and references to kindle-downloads will be available early in March (details will be posted by e-mail).
