Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar will focus on the short story and its generic conventions (what makes a short story short?, the iceberg theory, the short story vs. the novel etc.); its European prehistory (the novella: Boccaccio, Goethe); its rise in 19th (Irving, Poe, Bierce, Chopin, Perkins Gilman) and 20th (Hemingway and other lost generation writers) century America; the Irish tradition (Joyce); New Zealand (Mansfield); the postmodern (Barth, Coover) and postcolonial (Kureishi) world. As the short story may be thus considered a widespread phenomenon of old and new anglophone literatures outside the British core territory, there remains the question if there is also a distinctly British short story tradition.
