Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This survey lecture course sets out to provide the background in history, geography and population ("race" and ethnicity) necessary for a deeper understanding of U.S.-American life and arts in a foreign-language-learning context. Special sessions will deal with the political, social and cultural realities of the era popularly known as the "Wild West" and its representations and typical misrepresentations in mainstream literature and film (three of our legendary Western icons will be Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp and Geronimo).
We will also consider topical issues of the day (e.g., the 2012 presidential election) - and all along the way, we will look at some historical and ideological differences between the United States and Canada (why is there no Canadian "Wild West", or is there?).

Assessment and permitted materials

This will be based on a final 90-minute written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This course is designed to introduce students to the comparative and interdisciplinary study of U.S.-American culture(s).

Multi-media based lecture course (internet, audio and video presentations).
