Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This survey lecture course sets out to provide the background in history, geography, demography ("race" and ethnicity), politics and popular culture necessary for a deeper understanding of USAmerican life and arts in a foreign-language-learning context. The focus is on the formation ("construction") of the country from contact-time (1492ff.) through the colonial, revolutionary and early national eras to the Civil War (aka War between the States, 1861-65) and the "reconstruction" of the nation 1865-77.
We will also consider topical issues of the day - and all along the way, we will look at historical and ideological differences (and similarities) between the United States and Canada.

Assessment and permitted materials

This will be based on a final 90-minute written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This course is designed to introduce students to the comparative and interdisciplinary study of USAmerican cultures.
