Film Adaptations of Novels

11.00 ECTS (2.00 SWS), SPL 12 - Anglistik
Continuous assessment of course work

The aim of this course is to compare the imaginative worlds created by narrative and film. We will concentrate on different types of adaptation of novels and semi-autobiographical memoirs. Special attention will be devoted to comparing the narrative perspective of the written text with that of the lens, discussing the opportunities afforded by the different media for drawing attention to the themes of the creative works, important experiences, atmosphere and ways of challenging expectations. A further emphasis is on the creation of a historically specific time and a sense of place, ranging from post-war Vienna, India, Africa and the transformations of Great Britain.
