Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This seminar will focus on Britain in the late 1950s and early 1960s and explore the early stages of the British Tradition of Cultural Studies within a larger context. We will look at literary classics of the period, such as Allan Sillitoe’s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1958) or Colin MacInnes’ Absolute Beginners (1959), but will also try to examine the values and beliefs of the Mods and Teds, and other Rebels Without A Cause. We will learn what Free Cinema and Vital Theatre stand for, watch the beginnings of Coronation Street and read key texts by the founding fathers of British Cultural Studies, such as passages from the writings of Raymond Williams, Richard Hoggart and the young Stuart Hall. Against all those manly men women took issue, which will lead us to the Women’s Studies Group at the Birmingham CSCC and their work on the marginalization of women in the early stages of British Cultural Studies.
