Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The re-establishment of power sharing in May 2007 was a watershed in the bloody conflict that blighted Northern Ireland for almost four decades. For the first time since the foundaiton of the state, both of the main unionist and nationalist parties govern Northern Ireland. These recent developments suggest that the promise of the 1998 Agreement for a peaceful and reconciled society and common culture that can bridge the 'Two Traditions' could now be fulfilled. This interdisciplinary seminar examines the intersections of culture and politics in Northern Ireland during the course of the 'Troubles' and the Peace Process (1960s to the present). It considers the principal cultural debates in this period, and the ways in which these debates are reflected and represented in various forms of cultural production. We will examine sectarianism, the civil rights movement, Bloody Sunday, the hunger strikes, marches and parades, and the peace process, focusing on issues of nationalism, religion, ideology, gender, class, political violence and reconciliation endeavours. The module will explore the configuration, representation and negotiation of identity in a variety of textual forms in Northern Ireland, including popular culture, visual art, film, and drama.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance, preparation of set readings and participation in class discussions; oral presentation; SE-research paper.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The aim of this seminar is to familiarize students with Northern Irish politics and culture and their complex and often intricate intersections. It will introduce key issues, concepts and methods for studying various forms of popular and artistic cultural productions, thereby offering a versatile toolkit for cultural analysis on an interdisciplinary level.
Examination topics
Small-group and all-class discussions of set readings, a paper presentation.
