Aims, contents and method of the course

How does "New Media" change ideas of education and related skills? What does it mean for production of knowledge, identities, and culture? How does social networking, blogging, YouTube, Wikipedia, Twitter etc. (usually referred to web 2.0) change the practice and content of studying English & American Studies? Does and should it affect academic practice and teaching at all?
In this course, students will critically explore the affordances of web 2.0 and relate it to their study context to enhance critical media literacy, reflect on their own academic practice and English Studies in general.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation and performance in class, offline & online homework activities, midterm test, final portfolio

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This course serves as workshop to develop a critical understanding of the notions "New Media", "critical media literacy" and "digital literacy" in the context of education and English Studies.

Examination topics

Students will approach the topic from various theoretical perspectives. Class readings, in-class tasks and discussions, offline & online homework activities.
A class blog will be set up where students will post class related ideas and findings on a regular basis. -> Regular Internet access is obligatory.
