Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We will critically examine how national identity is used as a selling point in various types of popular media to understand broader cultural dynamics. With a focus on commercial and promotional cultural texts (such as print-, TV- and online- advertisements) the class aims at exploring the interrelation of representation, identities, consumption, production and power.
We will engage with concepts o Cultural Studies and social semiotics to provide a practical and theoretical toolkit for doing critical media analysis.

Assessment and permitted materials

in class and online participation, group activities, a midterm test, a group presentation and a final portfolio.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This course is aimed at teacher trainees and BA students and serves as a workshop to develop a critical and practical understanding of media analysis. It aims at introducing and advancing practices of cultural and media studies.

Examination topics

Interactive set up. Students will be introduced to a range of concepts to strengthen critical media literacy. Next to class readings, in-class activities and discussions, students will work in groups on various tasks. A class blog will be set up where students will post class related ideas and findings on a regular basis. -> Regular internet access is obligatory.
