Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Women co-created Hollywood, they ran parts of it, and once, they wrote half the scripts. They were and still are makers of fortunes and of careers, discovered new stories and new talents. So how come there’s still such a “paucity” of female directors in all those “100 Must-Watch Movies” lists? Women made films long before Jane Campion made “The Piano” and they are to be found in all genres.

We will have a look into film history and films, into the supposed film canon, who wrote it and who has been left out of it. The film industry itself has not been very accessible, neither has film distribution or film criticism. We will investigate the structures that helped diminishing and filtering the work of female producers, writers and directors and still do so, the strategies of gatekeeping from film festivals, film museums to film criticism concerning not only gender but also race, LGBTQ+, disability, age, and body size. Representation off screen influences representation on screen.

We’ll discover filmmakers, their oeuvres and biographies and ways to make sure future pupils know about the female ancestors of filmmaking as well as new films and where to find them. We’ll look at the resources and there’s also be the opportunity to listen to the expertise of industry specialists and ask questions.
