Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Dangerous shadows, the sudden sound of gunfire, a beautiful woman and a dead body on the ground. Hardly any other American film genre has left such an impact on the movie universe or has proven to be as immortal as film noir.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will watch a selected number of films, which will be in-depthly discussed in class.
They will be asked to give short presentations and hand in a written paper at the end of the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

But what exactly is film noir? A certain technique? A particular mise-en-scene? A special type of plot set against a distinct idea of story?
Or is an uncanny sense of paranoia, a unique idea of anxiety and general discomfort, what is most essential about film noir.
Nowhere is the feeling of discomfort between race, sex, gender and nation more palpable than in films noir.

Examination topics

In small group and all-class discussions students will address topics such as:
)Film Noir : a genre or a visual style?
)Film Noir and post-war anxieties
)The question of gender in Film Noir
)Spaces of Film Noir: the deadly urban environment
)The Gaze in Film Noir

Reading list

Films to be watched:
Out of the Past (1947, Jacques Tourneur)
The Big Heat (1953, Fritz Lang)
Blade Runner (1982, Ridley Scott)

As well as excerpts of Double Indemnity, Dead Reckoning, Sunset Boulevard, This Gun for Hire, The Killers and others.
