Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Film noir offers a rich canvas for analysis and deconstruction of constructed Western gender identities. When it comes to sexuality and gender, an uncanny sense of paranoia and anxiety lies at the core of Film Noir.Deconstructing the gender politics it prescribes for its archetypes: the femme fatale, the cynical detective, the villain and the unwilling hero/antihero is as fascinating as it is timeless for understanding the stylized repetitions that make up gender identities.
Assessment and permitted materials
In addition to the primary texts, students will also be required to read secondary materials. They will be asked to hold short presentations in class, hand in written assignments and take a final written test.
All the articles and excerpts from books will be provided online via MOODLE.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This CMA class will familiarize its participants with the concept of the (male) gaze, the idea of gender as normative fiction and stylized repetition, as well as the politics of Othering as they appear in the gender arena.Students will understand how to decode film noir for the hegemonic, negotiated and oppositional readings it offers to its audiences today.Through in-class presentations and group discussions students will try to find answers to questions such as:What stylistic devices do films noir use to encode femininity and masculinity?
How do films noir reveal possible shortcomings of patriarchal power structures?
How do these films treat different ethnicities and sexualities at that time considered Other?
