Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course explores YouTube as Anglophone cultural form(at) negotiating discourses of popular culture, multimedia, interactivity, authenticity, identity, globalization, politics, education and many more. Approaching YouTube along the lines of the circuit of culture, which stresses production, consumption, regulation, representation and identity, we will look at the complex meaning making processes related to YouTube from an Anglophone perspective.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance, regular readings, class participation, on- and offline activities, (on- and offline) portfolio, class presentations, mini-research project.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will be encouraged to deepen and enhance their basic analytical skills developed in course of the introductory class to Cultural Studies. They will acquire the ability to assess, evaluate and understand different theoretical perspectives and how they deal with the specific (cultural, economic, technological) affordances of YouTube.
Examination topics
The new social media form(at) YouTube will serve as rich media body to train and practice cultural and especially visual literacy:
Semiotic approaches to videoclips; perspectives on multimodality, culture industries, fan cultures and digital ethnography; appropriation of YouTube as a learning/teaching tool e.g. in the English classroom
