Perspectives on games: Approaching digital literacy for English and cultural studies
Continuous assessment of course work
Labels
The increasing popularity of gaming as a pastime activity confronts students of English and American studies with new and challenging questions: As students of cultural studies, how can we understand the economic, social and cultural implications of games? As prospective educators, how can we assess and responsibly harness the mediums potential for the English language classroom? These are the main questions that students are exposed to throughout the semester.

Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
regular (active) attendance, in-class activities, reading, final folder including a special task relating to the students specific focus (BA student or prospective teacher)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This course aims at fostering critical understanding of the relations between (digital) games, identity and learning. Students are encouraged to widen their digital media literacy, analytical and teaching skills by exploring games in the context of English and cultural studies.
Examination topics
The tools to attain this will range from abstract theoretical models to small design activities. Theories and models introduced will serve to read and understand games as cultural texts as they impact notions of identity and learning. Design activities serve to make these claims tangible on the level of practical usability. Students are required to hand in a final folder in which they demonstrate their critical literacy skills and leverage them for their specific study focus (BA or prospective teacher). This involves a brief cultural analysis of a chosen game or its adaptation for the English language classroom.
