Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In order to understand broader cultural dynamics, we will critically examine how national identity is used as a selling point in various types of popular media. With a focus on commercial and promotional cultural texts (such as print-, TV- and online- advertisements, film trailers, cook shows and examples from the music industry) the class aims at exploring the interrelation of representation, identities, consumption, production and power.
Therefore, we will engage with multimodality and social semiotics to provide a practical and theoretical toolkit for doing critical media analysis.
