Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

From the death of Lady Diana to the royal wedding, from Michael Jordan to the Super Bowl, from 9/11 to launching TMNT, from the first Obama election campaign to the Kony 2012 campaign - media spectacles produced by the news, sports, politics and the entertainment industry are the peaks in today’s media landscape and invite collective and participatory experiences through all ages.

This course seeks to explore the dynamics of fascination of “media spectacles” from a critical media literacy angle. Students will practice and enhance their analytical skills in media and cultural studies to approach these popular media phenomena as students now and teachers in the future.
We will address questions of representation, identity, consumption, production and regulation and we will further discuss the cultural, social, political, ideological and ethical impact of media spectacles.
