Visual Pleasure and Exoticism in Film Studies
Continuous assessment of course work
Labels
This course takes as its basis a critical viewing position that understands that how we see affects what we see. We apply this to the subject/object and normative/exotic binary of Hollywood film between the dominant discourse subject (construed as white and male) and the object (women, minorities, immigrants and indigenous peoples). Taking as a starting point Laura Mulveys Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, Edward Saids Introduction to Orientalism, and visual theory by John Berger and Slavoj iek, the course deconstructs the Hollywood cinema representation of female and exotic characters, which we compare to how women and minority film-makers present themselves in their own cinema. Each popular, Western-mainstream film is paired with a lesser-known film to offer students other ways of seeing, for example Japanese women in Memoirs of a Geisha (Rob Marshall 2005) versus Millennium Actress (Satoshi Kon 2001) and Indian poverty in Slumdog Millionaire (Danny Boyle 2008) versus Salaam Bombay (Mira Nair 1988).
