Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Are comics or graphic narratives able to tackle difficult issues like gender, race or discrimination?
Or is the medium, as has so often been claimed in the past, simply superficial and childish?

This CMA class discusses different graphic narratives that are engaging in complex matters such as gender&sexuality; racism&discrimination; xenophobia&homophobia; violence&criminality.
After receiving an introduction into the complexity of the hybrid medium COMICS/Graphic Narratives students will read and discuss the graphic narratives on the reading list.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will be required to read secondary materials. They will be asked to hold short presentations in class, hand in written assignments and take a final written test.
All the articles and excerpts from books will be provided online via MOODLE.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final mark will be based on the results of the final written test, the written assignments and the in-class presentation as well as the in-class participation of the students. The final written test will be based on the course sessions and the required reading, consisting of multiple choice/short questions and essay questions to choose from.

Examination topics

This class will - through the chosen graphic narratives - approach topics like discrimination, racism, sexism and homophobia. Students will be encouraged to apply feminist, post-structuralist and post-colonial theories to the comics on the reading list.
