Dear Students,

Due to preventive measures taken by the Vienna University there will be no 'physical classes' until after the Easter Break. What will take place over the next couple of weeks is 'distance teaching'. This CMA course is currently adapted to make this possible. You will be updated regularly via MOODLE and U:SPACE and E-Mail!

All the Best,

Aims, contents and method of the course

Complex Issues in a Popular Medium:Comics as a Means of Constructing Realities

Comics/Sequential art-also referred to as graphic narratives-produce meaning at the intersection between verbal and visual image. Because of their high specificity, they are especially well-suited for developing analytical skills regarding medium-specific modes of meaning production.
Graphic narratives engage in complex questions and touch every imaginable subject matter: identity&sexuality, racism&inequality, history&politics. In this CMA class students will be introduced to the specifics rules that inform the multimodal medium comics and investigate how this hybrid medium addresses complex topics.

During this course students will receive an introduction into various genres of anglophone comics and critically discuss and analyse the realities mediated and constructed in these comics. Analytical approaches will be based on identity theories, semiotics, gender studies and social studies.
