Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The figure of the Faustian overreacher, "Mad Scientist", or "Modern Prometheus" has fascinated authors for centuries. In this course, we will examine various aspects surrounding this trope, such as stereotypical depictions of scientists across media; discursive processes of 'othering' and the ideologies inherent in them; cyborgs, androids, and their creators as modern-day examples of the Frankenstein trope; feminist techoscience (Donna Haraway)..
We will explore a range of concepts, theories, and methodologies relating to these topics and discuss media-specific analysis techniques with regard to the cultural texts that will form the basis of our in-class discussions and the portfolio.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Portfolio (consisting of 4 tasks): 50p
- Regular attendance and in-class participation: 30p
- Short assignments and tasks (e.g. preparing discussion questions for one of the sessions; writing a reflection): 20p

The course will be held online (at least for the foreseeable future) and contain both synchronous and asynchronous elements. The course requirements will be discussed in detail during the first session.

Grading scale:
1: 100-91p
2: 90-81p
3: 80-71p
4: 70-60p
5: 59-0p

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students must fulfill and pass each of the 3 course requirements (portfolio, regular attendance and participation, short assignments and tasks).

Examination topics

This is an interactive course with continuous assessment ("prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung"). In addition to handing in a written portfolio, participants are expected to read all set texts and actively participate in class throughout the semester.

Reading list

While the course as such will focus primarily on cultural rather than literary texts, knowledge of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" is highly desirable - please make sure to read it or at least inform yourself in detail about its content, structure, and key themes before the first session (the course will start March 19th owing to the "Rektorstag" on March 12th.)

A complete list of materials (and instructions on how to access them) will be provided in the first session.

The eLearning platform Moodle will be used in this course.
