Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will deal with four of the most prominent Native American ("Indian") icons in US-American culture(s): Matoaka/"Pocahontas" (1595-1617, of John Smith and Walt Disney fame), Kateri Tekakwitha (1556-80, the first US/Canadian saint, canonized in 2012), Sacagawea (1788-1812, interpreter and de facto guide with the Lewis & Clark expedition of 1804-06) and Goyathlay/Geronimo (1829-1909, Chiricahua-Mescalero medicine man and "the most hated Indian warrior" of his time).
Starting with the (often enough conflicting) historical and biographical data available, we will analyse how these figures were in time culturally, politically and commercially commodified and constructed as larger-than-life representations of North American "Indianness".
