Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Republic of Ireland, which during the first half of 2013 holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU, is currently enjoying a high level of international visibility. Ireland is also under observation, as it were, when it comes to ways of dealing with the hangovers and after-effects of economic and social crises in the post-Celtic Tiger era. This series of lectures will study "(Post-)Celtic Tiger Ireland" from a variety of different perspectives: e.g. Ireland and the Financial Wild West, Ireland and Cultural Psychology, Political Reaction to the Collapse of the Celtic Tiger, Film and Television in Post-Celtic Tiger Ireland, Filmmaking in Contemporary Ireland, Ireland and the EU, Celtic Tiger Trash. (NB: Speakers and topics to be confirmed!)
In 2009, the Embassy of Ireland and the University of Vienna devised a partnership programme with a view to fostering and strengthening the study of Ireland, its languages, history, politics, society, literature, media, culture(s) etc. Under this scheme a team of renowned international experts in the field of Irish Cultural Studies have been invited to come to Vienna and present a variety of topics and issues contributing to a general analysis of 'Ireland Today'.
