Aims, contents and method of the course

Core Content

The objectives of this course are to prepare students for the "Schulpraktikum" by focusing on the diverse roles and tasks of the EFL teacher, the basic concepts of CLT, lesson planning, classroom management and practical teaching techniques, as well as observation criteria.

Core content:
- Teaching reading
- Teaching speaking
- Teaching writing
- Teaching grammar

Students will be expected to observe and to do teaching at school (NMS).

Method: group interaction, discussions, lecturer input, observation, team teaching

Assessment and permitted materials

- teaching activity & reflection 18%
- observation report 7%
- teaching the language skills/system (3 out of the following 4): reading, speaking, writing, grammar 16% each
- concluding reflection 10%
- participation in class, HW assignments, online assignments, discussions 17%
- language issues/not complying with formal aspects -20%

Information

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

requirements ("zwingend vorgeschriebene Leistungen"): You are expected to:

1) teach a lesson (together with a colleague) at the school of your mentor

2) observe a lesson at the school of your mentor

3) hand in a course portfolio

4) participate actively in the class sessions

5) attend class regularly (max. 2 absences). The pass mark is 60%.
