Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is taught in a team teaching mode, with two separate course components taking place in alternating sessions, focusing respectively on:
1. supporting students during their practice phase (practice coaching)
2. complementary input on relevant ELT areas (materials evaluation and development)

PRACTICE COACHING
The aim of the Practice Coaching component of this course is to assist and support student teachers during their practice phase (Schulpraxis UF Englisch) with regard to observation techniques, planning tasks, classroom management issues and the evaluation of their observation and teaching experiences.

Core Content:
applying theoretical concepts in practice;
subject-specific observation techniques;
planning EFL language teaching activities and lessons (including the design if home assignment tasks and the application of basic differentiation techniques); professional reflection procedures (individual and collaborative)

Methods:
Interactive class with student participation in small-groups and all-class discussions of topics related to participants' observations, teaching experiences and discussions on EFL theory acquired in specific reading assignments.
The main instrument for observation, reflection and discussion is the EPOSTL - European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages - please make sure you have access to the document in all sessions.

MATERIALS EVALUATION AND DEVELOPMENT
The Materials Evaluation and Development course component aims at providing students with the background knowledge and basic skills required to critically analyse existing language teaching materials, as well as to modify and develop their own activities in accordance with competence-oriented criteria and target group needs. The focus will be on the following areas:
Grammar
Vocabulary
Extensive reading
Throughout the course, we will discuss relevant background reading, explore various (schoolbook) materials and activities, and integrate pertinent national and European documents (e.g. national curricula, the CEFR, the ELP), relating them to specific English language teaching contexts.

Methods:
A mixture of methods will be employed, including
- individual and group activities in and outside of class time,
- discussions in class,
- short presentations by the lecturer.
