Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Learning about, reflecting on and trying out "new" approaches to language teaching and learning. This semester we’ll be focusing on CALL (computer assisted language learning), learner autonomy and heterogeneous classes.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular and active participation, micro teaching project at a school/other educational establishment with accompanying presentation in class and project report (final written assignment).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Our goal is to explore innovative approaches to language learning and teaching which could help learners and teachers respond to the challenges facing the Austrian educational system in the next 10 years or so. However, innovation for innovation's sake isn't sustainable – so we'll start off by looking at what issues there are in the (language learning) classroom at present and how new methods and approaches could be applied to deal with them.

Examination topics

Introductory webquest. Micro teaching project at a school of your choice. Reflection on personal teaching/learning experiences, discussions of reading and evaluation of typical "activities" to do in class. There will be advance reading for some classes and follow-up reading for others.

IMPORTANT: the first three weeks of class will take place in the form of a webquest organized via MOODLE. To confirm your place in this course you do not have to come to the university for the first class but you do have to complete certain moodle activities by midnight on Tuesday 9th October. In other words, virtual (online) attendance/participation is required in the first three weeks but not during class times. For this reason, easy internet access (at home and/or university) is paramount. The first f2f session will be on Tuesday 30th October.

Reading list

Materials will be provided in class (also by students) and made available on moodle.
