Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Literature, in its myriads of formats and genres, can be a staple resource in a contemporary classroom working with a communicative rationale. However, simply throwing books at young learners without any consideration of aims, methods and expected outcomes is not the way to go about it. This course will focus on a principled (but no less joyful) approach to using contemporary literary materials (in a wider sense) at all stages of the EFL classroom.

Students will be able to
- Reflect on their own experiences with literature as English learners and compare their beliefs with the available research
- get to know recent novels, short stories, graphic novels and other literary texts (in the wider sense) that have potential for English language education
- Select aims, materials and methods in accordance with the above and create coherent and convincing lesson plans

Methods: readings and discussions, video book review, creative writing exercise, pair/group work for lesson plans and presentations

Assessment and permitted materials

• Readings and discussions
• Presentation of materials and lesson plan (in pairs or groups)
