Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Course work (active participation in class activities, regular reading & other assignments, participation in (online) discussions & moodle activities, etc.); presenting an approach (group presentation/peer teaching); two-part written exam.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

2) Written exam part 1, applications (20%)
3) Written exam part 2, reflection (25%)
Course work (25%) must be done in addition to the three named parts; three out of the four parts must be positive.Grading scale:
1 (sehr gut) 100-90%;
2 (gut) 89-80%;
3 (befriedigend), 79-70%;
4 (genügend) 69-60%;
5 (nicht genügend) 59-0%.

The course aims at developing a reflective and critical understanding of English Language Teaching in students through a consideration of the guiding principles underlying professional ELT.
The key principles of ELT discussed will cover:
• Principle of research-based teaching
• Principle of accountability in teaching
• Principle of inclusionWithin each of these, a selection of thematic areas will be discussed in greater detail, such as:
• The role of theory in teaching practice
• Professionalism in language teaching
• Standardisation, including E8 standard, standardised final exams
• CEFR, ELP, competence models, curricula
• EPOSTL
• Multilingualism in the ELT classroom
• Differentiation
• Inclusion of neurodiverse learnersIn addition, the course will encourage in-depth engagement by students with a range of current approaches to EFL teaching. This will include:
• Presenting, trying out and evaluating selected approaches to EFL teaching
• Discussion of the "post-method era"
• Critical evaluation of CLT
• Influence of general trends on ELT, such English as a lingua franca, new media in teachingMethods
A mixture of methods will be employed, including
• both individual and group (online) activities in and outside of class time
• synchronous discussions in class
• short presentations by the lecturer
• group presentations by students
