Assessment and permitted materials
Course work (active participation in class activities, regular reading & other assignments, participation in discussions & moodle activities, etc.); presenting an ELT approach (group presentation/peer teaching); two portfolio tasks; two-part written exam.

3) Portfolio tasks: New Media (20%), ESP (15%)
4) Written exam: closed book + open book (30%)Minimum requirements:
- Regular attendance (max. 2 absences)
- Exam must be positive; all portfolio tasks have to be submitted.Grading scale:
1 (sehr gut) 100-90%;
2 (gut) 89-80%;
3 (befriedigend), 79-70%;
4 (genügend) 69-60%;
5 (nicht genügend) 59-0%

The course aims at developing a reflective and critical understanding of English Language Teaching in students through a consideration of the guiding principles underlying professional ELT. Within each of these principles, a selection of thematic areas will be discussed.The key principles of ELT discussed will cover:- Principles of technology-enhanced EFL teaching
(topics: integrating New Media in language teaching)
- Principles of research-based teaching
(topics: the relevance of ‘theory’ for teaching practice; EFL teaching as a profession)
- Principles of accountability in teaching
(topics: connections between the CEFR, educational standards, ELP & EPOSTL, E8 standards testing and the standardized Matura)- Principles of inclusive teaching
(topics: multilingual in the ELT classroom, individual learner differences, inclusion of neurodiverse learners)In addition, the course will encourage in-depth engagement by students with a range of current approaches to EFL teaching. This will include:
- Presenting, trying out and evaluating selected approaches to EFL teaching
- Discussion of the ‘post-method era’
- English as a Lingua Franca and its influence on teaching
- Teaching English for Specific Purposes.A mixture of methods will be employed, including
- both individual and group (online) activities in and outside of class time
- synchronous discussions in class
- short presentations by the lecturer
- group presentations by students.
