Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
regular attendance and participation in classroom discussions; oral presentations; portfolio consisting of different assignments (e.g. critical review of a secondary source, close reading of key passages, reading journal)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Revising the basic parameters of literary analysis; providing students with a basic toolkit for a thorough and in-depth engagement with literary texts
Examination topics
Classroom discussions, student presentations, final portfolio
Reading list
This Critical Readings course is chiefly concerned with various forms of frame narratives. Texts to be studied include William Shakespeare: Hamlet (1599-1602), Mary Shelley: Frankenstein (1818) and Joseph Conrad: Heart of Darkness (1899). The complete list of set texts will be announced in the first session. Additional texts (short stories, poems and theoretical articles) will be provided on moodle.
