Aims, contents and method of the course

In this Critical Readings course we will look at literary texts dealing with historical events or personalities across a variety of genres (history play, historical novel, sonnet, ballad, ode) and literary periods. We will explore the ways in which history has inspired the literary imagination and in which the past has been imagined, mediated and constructed in these texts. Emphasis will also be put on the historical and cultural contexts in which the texts are embedded. From a theoretical point of view, the interface of literature, history and critical theory will be focused on.

Aims:
Students will become familiar with literary texts from different periods of time, deepen their knowledge of terminology and their analytical skills, and apply a range of critical and theoretical approaches to drama, narrative fiction and poetry. In addition, they will develop their writing and presentation skills.

In-class discussions, reading assignments, oral presentations, group work, written assignments

Assessment and permitted materials

Portfolio consisting of individual assignments
oral presentation
active participation in discussions and group work
(max 2 missed sessions)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Portfolio: 45%
oral presentation: 30%
active participation in discussions and group work: 25%

Students have to reach at least 60% altogether (and 50% of each task) to pass this course and are requested to upload the portfolio tasks as .pdf files onto Turnitin on Moodle.

Grading scale:
1: 100-90%
2: 89-80%
3: 79-70%
4: 69-60%
5: 59-0%

Examination topics

Everything covered in class, including all the mandatory texts, presentations, in-class discussions and the portfolio.
There will be no written exam.
