Easter, 1916: Representing the Rising
The year 2016 marks the centenary of the 1916 Irish Rebellion against British foreign rule known as the Easter Rising. Although the Rising was not successful in in terms of contemporary power politics it is widely seen as a first step towards an Independent Irish Republic, which emerged in the time span between 1922 and 1949. As the cultural memory of the Rising functions as a cornerstone of present-day Irish cultural identity, this lecture series is going to focus on cultural representations of the 1916 rebellion in the fields of history, literature, film and other media.
