Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this research seminar, like in most courses in our department, we will be communicating via English as a lingua franca (ELF). Research into ELF interaction has shown that for effective communication to be achieved, what matters is not so much the forms of the language that speakers use but much more certain communication strategies and interactive processes they employ. In particular, interlocutors have been found to mutually adapt the way they speak/their communicative behaviour in a process that social psychologists call ‘accommodation’. In light of this, it is surprising that relatively few detailed analyses of accommodation processes in ELF interactions have been conducted to date.In this research seminar, we will empirically explore accommodation in ELF interactions in detail using sets of speech events from the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English (VOICE). For this purpose, students will form small groups, in which they will investigate a lexical, pragmatic or syntactic phenomenon individually using the same data set. This research process will involve literature research, developing an initial categorization scheme, applying and adapting categories by means of detailed qualitative data coding and analysis and presenting salient findings and methodological insights. For the purpose of identifying and annotating instances of accommodation (i.e. convergence and divergence) in the data, students will be introduced to qualitative data analysis software (Maxqda) and will work with the software independently and collaboratively for their joint presentation and their written research report.
