Aims, contents and method of the course

This interactive course will offer an introduction to a range of theoretical perspectives and traditions emerging from the work of Mikhail Bakhtin, including

the Carnivalesque, Menippean Satire, & the comic tradition of the burlesque
the grotesque body
the Feast of Fools, the Land of Cockayne, & the Land of the Chronotope
Julia Kristeva’s theory of Abjection
the dialogic novel/the dialogic self
polyglossia & heteroglossia

Assessment and permitted materials

short essays and analyses collected in a portfolio
topics to be presented in class
contribution to classroom discussion

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

pass rate: 51%
assessment criteria:
Essay with a focus on theory (1200 or more words) 30%
Essay which applies Bakhtinian theory to literary / cultural analysis (1000 words) 30%
Presentation in class 20%
Discussion 20%
No more than two unexcused absences!
