Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course we will discuss particular topics and key concepts within the philosophy of science, which are especially important to linguistics. Among these topics are: different definitions and models of language and the linguistic sign, and the question of meaning in linguistics, philosophy and cultural theory. We will also explore distinctions and questions such as sense and reference; text, discourse, context, pretext and inter-text; speech act and performativity; what are (linguistic) facts and how do they relate to theories? Are there empirical facts independent of theories about them? What does it mean to say of something that it is constructed by language or discourse?
The aim of the course is to learn about the basic concepts, problems and models in the philosophy of science and their relevance for linguistics.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance, participation in class discussions, minutes, upload your answers to reading questions in time.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Assessment:
1. Class minutes for one session 10%
You are responsible for taking notes of all the main points/ issues discussed in one class session. Upload your notes onto Moodle by the Sunday 6pm before the next session.
2. Mid-term exam 30%
In class writing exam. 5 short essay questions and you have to choose 3 to answer. Questions are based on the weekly reading questions and texts and discussion.
3. Oral Final Exam 30%
You will be tested in pairs on the last day of class. You will be allowed to sign-up for a testing session.
4. Participation 30%
Participation is based on punctuality, coming to class prepared, and participating in the classroom activities and discussion. It includes uploading questions to the weekly readings
