Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course we shall deal with the theories and methods of what is sometimes referred to as ‘normal science’ and ask ourselves to what extent they can be usefully applied in addressing questions about language and language use. In particular, we shall discuss differences between the so called natural sciences, which are often regarded as objective and analytical, and the humanities, which are considered as subjective and hermeneutic. In the course fundamental concepts (such as reality, ontology, hypothesis, theory, evidence, explanation, falsification, constructionism, etc.) will be introduced on the basis of relevant texts, and students will be encouraged to test their usefulness on any research projects of their own, which they may be planning or carrying out.

Assessment and permitted materials

Classroom participation, preparation and chairing of sessions on specific topics, shorter written assignments, portfolio paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Our goal is learn how (a) useful and it is to reflect on and become aware of the principles by which knowledge about language can be produced, and (b) to become competent in this kind of reflection.

Examination topics

Reading of set texts on the theory of science, classroom discussion, and application to specific linguistic research problems. Students will be asked to prepare and chair the discussion of specific topics and texts.
