Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course we will discuss particular topics and key concepts within the philosophy of science, which are especially important to linguistics. Among these topics are: different definitions and models of language and the linguistic sign, and the question of meaning in linguistics, philosophy and cultural theory. We will also explore distinctions and questions such as sense and reference; text, discourse, context, pretext and inter-text; speech act and performativity; what are (linguistic) facts and how do they relate to theories? Are there empirical facts independent of theories about them? What does it mean to say of something that it is constructed by language or discourse?
