Aims, contents and method of the course

History of the four Periods of European Avant-Gardes on the basis of case studies - no full overview is intended!

1) Proto-Avantgarde
2) Pre-WW1 and wartime; 1919-1939
3) Neo-Avantgarde
4) Contemporary Avant-Garde Tendencies

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam (German or English)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A presentation of the most important isms and protagonists of the Italian, French, German and Austrian, Russian and Ukrainian, Czech, Hungarian, Nordic and Yugoslavian Avant-Garde movements, including an overview of less known isms and representants.

Examination topics

Lecture series with the participation of international experts. Some lectures refer to theater, film, fine arts and digital media but literature is the central point of interest.
