Aims, contents and method of the course

An introduction to the most important authors, works, genres, themes and currents in Finnish contemporary literature in their literary and social context. The literary strategies, themes, topics and styles are studied in relation current social developments within Finnish society, changes related to for example medialisation of culture and global "postcapitalism".

Assessment and permitted materials

As a part of the course the students take part in a seminar in which the candidates of the Nordic Council literary prize 2014 are presented. At the end of the semester an examination on the basis of the lectures, PowerPoint presentations, and texts in the literature list takes place. Also the activity in the discussions during the lessons counts.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The student will get an overview of the most important authors, works, genres, themes and currents in Finnish contemporary literature in their literary and social context. The course also prepares the students for a planned excursion to Frankfurt book fair which has 2014 Finnish literature as its theme.

Examination topics

Lectures, textanalysis and discussions.

Reading list

Finnish literature in German and English translations, literary-historical overviews and articles. A list of literature is given in the first lecture.
