Aims, contents and method of the course

The course begins by methodological section with following topics: 1) central features of scientific discourse and how it differs from other literary discussion, 2) research topic and the formulation of research questions, 3) argumentation, 4) gathering of source material, and its evaluation, 5) use of scientific concepts and theoretical framework, 6) use of references, 7) use of methods, 8) giving feedback and instruction to others. The methodological section also includes small exercises related to these questions. After that follows discussion section, which consists of the presentation of the seminar papers, and their handling in the group.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in meetings and group discussions, giving feedback and acting as an opponent. A written essay of appr. 15 pages (3500-4000 words)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is a BA-seminar, where the students learn the basic elements of how to carry out research and join the academic discussion.

Reading list

Finnish literature will be the preferable source material, other options are also possible, according to the students' own interests.
