Aims, contents and method of the course

This course presents a first introduction in the Low Countries: cultures, societies and inhabitants. What are current themes in public discourse in the Netherlands, Flanders and Belgium, how can the social fabric be characterized and how do the inhabitants of the Low Countries view themselves and their past? Such questions will be guiding into the various themes, such as monarchy, politics and federal structure (Belgium), cultural diversity, pillarization and toleration (Netherlands), 20th Century World Wars, the colonial past, and the Golden Ages of both Flanders and the Netherlands.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final exam is written and consists of essay questions. Answers can be formulated either in German, or in Dutch.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Of a total of 42 points, at least 24 points are needed for a positive exam result.

Examination topics

In 10 lectures, the various themes are presented and discussed. These lectures are supported by texts, which are relevant for the final exam. On the learning platform Moodle, texts (accompagnied by study questions) as well as the lecture ppt slides are presented.
