Aims, contents and method of the course

After completing the course the student is able to:
• Describe the main lines of Writing about Nature in Finnish Culture
• Describe the tradition of Nature Literature in Finnish prose and lyrics

• Understand the theory of ecocriticism and posthumanism in literature
• Understand how the presentation of Nature changes according the literary styles

• Analyse the relation of Language and Nature in prose and poetry
Content:
Nature, style, language and culture in Finnish prose and lyrics.
• Sophisticated culture in the Forest (Havaste ethnographical prose) • Brothers with Nature (Kivi, prose) • Symbolism (Leino lyrics) • Impressionism (Aho,prose) • agrarian realism (Haanpää) • biological realism (Sillanpää) • humoristic realism (Huovinen) • Living with the element of Sea (Tove Jansson) • Essays of Pollution (Linkola,nonfiction) • Behind the limits of Culture (Haavikko, modernistic poetry) • Contemplation with the Lake (Manner, modernistic poetry) • Aphoristic Landscapes (Rekola, modernistic poetry) • experimental writing, language and environment.
Modes of Study:
Lectures, text analyses, group work and private study

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Describing the main lines of Nature description in Finnish Literature, knowing the posthumanistic point of view and ecocritical interpretations of Literature

Articles of ecocriticism and posthumanism, and texts to analyse are deliveded during the Course.
