Aims, contents and method of the course

The course gives an overall picture about the Hungarian history from the 2nd century to the beginning of the 19th century from the Roman Pannonia to the enlightenment under Joseph the Second. The annals history is only a frame the political, economic and social history is emphasized

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To launch the most typical features of the Hungarian history is the purpose of the lecture: the characteristics of the Roman culture in the ancient Pannonia, from the nomadic way of life to the settlement of Hungarians, the beginnings of Christianity, the bridge-function between West and East, the causes of the economic backward, the structure of the Hungarian society in the Middle Ages, the Church as a carrier of the medieval culture, ethnic movements in the Carpathian-basin, the rise of the Hungarian dominancy, Hungary and the Osman Empire, the consequences of the Turkish rule and the Habsburg politics in Eastern Europe.

Examination topics


Analytic, critical and problem-oriental method is used to impart knowledge. Sources are key words in the lectures.
