Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic theoretical background of question semantics and pragmatics, and with the methods that can be used for the formal description and explanation of meaning differences between forms of interrogatives in selected Finno-Ugric languages.
Topics:
Inventory of sentence types, sentence type marking, default associations between sentence types and speech act types.
Interrogative clause types: possibilities of formal marking, interpretational differences.
Special uses of interrogative sentence types: rhetoric, reflective, biased, ’surprise-and-disapproval’ questions.
Discourse particles in interrogatives.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirement: 50% of the maximum number of points at the exam.
Assessment criteria:
90-100% = Sehr gut
75% = Gut
60% = Befriedigend
50% = Genügend
